The University of Texas-Pan American (4-5) became the eighth consecutive victim to fall to Texas A&M - International (10-2) as the Dustdevils handed the Lady Broncs a straight set loss (30-25, 31-29, 30-28) on Saturday (Sept. 18) in Laredo, TX.
Junior Katherine Taju led all hitters with 21 kills while adding 19 digs for the Dustdevils, who won their second match of the season against a Division I opponent. Desiree Arredondo and Stacey Faz combined to quarterback the Dustdevils' offense as the duo finished with 24 assists and 19 assists, respectively.
Senior Cathi Netemeyer (Los Fresnos, TX/University of Iowa) paced the Lady Broncs with 12 kills and finished the match with a .409 hitting percentage. Sophomore Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) contributed with 12 kills and 17 digs, which was good enough for her fifth double-double (kills-digs) of the season. Jen Dameworth (El Paso, TX/Franklin H.S.) dished out a match-high 36 assists while sophomore Chrissie Carrigan (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Mount Douglas Secondary School) racked up a match-high 25 digs.
The two teams combined for 355 attacks during the three-game affair while TAMIU held a .251 to .173 advantage in hitting percentage. The Lady Broncs recorded more assists (49-44) and digs (84-74), but were hindered by committing 13 more attack errors than their counterparts.
The UTPA women's volleyball team will be back in action on Wednesday (Sept. 22) as the Lady Broncs will play the first of five matches during the week at Prairie View A&M. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
