UTPA Snaps Two-Game Skid on the Road

The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball team evened its record at 5-5 and snapped a two-game losing skid after defeating Southwestern Athletic Conference opponent Prairie View A&M (6-9) in straight sets (30-17, 31-29, 30-18) on Wednesday (Sept. 22) at the Williams Nicks Arena.

Junior Danielle Holthe (Covina, CA/Bishop Amat Memorial H.S.) was the Lady Broncs' most lethal hitter against Prairie View A&M as she tied a career-high with 11 kills along with finishing with a personal-best .526 hitting percentage. As a team, the Lady Broncs finished with 54 kills to Prairie View A&M's 31 and also held a distinct advantage in hitting percentage by nailing .336 percent of their shots compared to the Lady Tigers' .049.

Sophomore Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) racked up her sixth double-double (kills-digs) of the season, finishing with 13 kills and 12 digs. The UTPA outside hitter has recorded seven matches of double-digit kills this season, and also became the first Lady Broncs' player to record at least 100 kills and 100 digs. She leads the team with 123 kills and is third with 114 digs.

"I'm extremely happy with the way that the team responded tonight," said head coach Dave Thorn. "We played more like a team than last weekend, and it was a very good start to a tough week. Hopefully, we can continue this momentum into the weekend.

Junior Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin H.S.) finished with nine kills with a hitting percentage of .333 along with two block solos and one dig. Sophomore Jen Dameworth (El Paso, TX/Franklin H.S.) nearly missed a double-double with eight kills and 12 assists, finishing with a .375 hitting mark, and Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) recorded a match-high 21 assists and had a .571 hitting percentage with four kills.

Carol Marcengo (Curitiba, Brazil/SPEI H.S.) came into the match ranked fifth in the country in digs per game, and finished with a match-high 14 digs for the winners.

Litiana Vakasausau led Prairie View A&M with 13 assists, 12 digs and six kills while Jamesha Sutton also added six kills.

The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Thursday (Sept. 23) at the Air Force Academy with game time slated for 7:00 p.m.
