The University of Texas - Pan American women's basketball team finished its three game road trip with a loss to Oklahoma State, 62-48, Sunday (Jan. 2) at the Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, OK.
The Lady Broncs started the game with some sharp shooting behind the arc from freshman, Kathy Guin (Guthrie, OK/Guthrie H.S.) who connected on two three-point attempts in the first two minutes of the game to take a five point lead 9-4. The game continued to be close with seven lead changes before the Lady Broncs would pull ahead, 22-17, after a Molly Shamel (Hector, NY/Yavapai College) lay-up with 8:50 remaining in first half action.
The Cowgirls would cut the lead to two points after three consecutive free throw makes with 7:13 to play, before Guin would hit again from three point range to push the lead to five at 25-20. The Lady Broncs continued to play strong offensively getting Dominique Montague (Gilbert, AZ/Central Arizona Co.) open underneath for a lay-up in the paint to take the lead to seven points. The Cowgirls then went on a 7-0 run with under four minutes to play to tie the score at 27 apiece headed into intermission.
The second half started with a lay-up from Devin Reed (Indianapolis, IN/Cowley County C.C.) to take the two point lead with 19:41 left in the game. After a three point make from OSU's Devry McDonald with 19:23 to play, the Cowgirls would take the lead and build on it for the remainder of play. UTPA kept things close for the first five minutes of the half, but were unable to regain control of the lead. OSU would use a 19-5 run during the second half to stretch the lead to double figures and put the game away.
Shooting 6-9 from the floor and connecting on 5-6 from behind the arc, Guin would lead UTPA with 18 points. Schamel would also finish in double figures with 10 points and five rebounds. For OSU, McDonald led the way with 15 points and was 8-10 from the charity stripe.
The Lady Broncs will return home for a game against Northern Arizona University on Saturday (Jan. 8) at the UTPA Fieldhouse tipping off at 7:00 p.m.
