For rock stars, the road can be a very lonely place.

The same could be said for The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball team - however; the road doesn't seem as lonely now that the Broncs have picked up a companion to join them.

UTPA evened its record at 9-9 and picked up its first road win of the season with a 64-54 triumph against Alcorn State on Thursday (Jan. 20) in Lorman, MS.

Senior Matt Berry (Tulsa, OK/Indiana State University) recorded his first double-double (points-rebounds) of the season with a 15-point, 11-rebound performance in 37 minutes of action. He also added a team-high four assists. Junior Chris Fagan (Bronx, NY/Trinidad State College) notched 11 points, including 6-8 from the free throw line, along with eight rebounds and three assists.

Senior Ray Castillo (San Antonio, TX/Temple College) led the Broncs with 18 points, draining six three-pointers in the contest, while racking up four rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists. It was the fifth time this season that Castillo has collected five or more treys in a game, and he now has 11 three-pointers in the last two games.

The Broncs had five players log 25 or more minutes in the game with senior Eric Montalvo (La Joya, TX/La Joya H.S.) playing all 40 minutes for the second consecutive game. He finished with seven points, six rebounds, two steals and two assists. Junior Derrick East (Binger, OK/Lookeba-Sickles H.S.) also added seven points and six rebounds in 34 minutes.

Senior Sergio Sanchez (San Antonio, TX/Temple College) made his return to the UTPA lineup after sitting out for the past month with a hand injury. He failed to hit a shot in the game, but did drain a pair of free throws to finish with two points in 10 minutes of action.

The shooting performance wasn't the prettiest for UTPA as the Broncs only connected on 34 percent (16-46) of their shots, including an identical 34 percent (8-23) from behind the three-point arc. However - the Broncs' defense limited Alcorn State to 36 percent (20-55) from the field and out-rebounded the Braves by a 39-28 margin.

Delvin Thompson led Alcorn State with 22 points, but was the only Brave to finish in double digits.

The Broncs will be back in action on Wednesday (Jan. 26) against rival Texas A&M - Corpus Christi. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
