In large part to a 50 percent shooting performance, the University of Oklahoma improved its record to 10-2 with a 94-54 victory over UTPA (7-6) in Norman, OK, on Sunday (Jan. 2).
The Sooners had four players score in double figures, including three coming off the bench, with forward Taj Gray leading the way by notching a double-double with a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds. Lawrence McKenzie added 18 points, draining a game-high four three-pointers, while Terrell Everett and Longar Longar added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
After finishing the first half 16-29 (55.2 percent), the Sooners went into intermission with a 48-26 lead. The Broncs shot 40.9 percent (9-22) during the first set of 20 minutes, and the perimeter game was stifled by the Sooners' defense as UTPA connected on only one trey in that frame. For the game, UTPA made a season-low three treys and have drained only seven three-pointers over the past two contests.
UTPA committed 23 turnovers in the game compared to six for the Sooners, and were out-rebounded for the second time this season by a 40-33 margin. Oklahoma's offense dished out 18 assists while the Broncs were held to a season-low six assists.
Senior Chris Fagan (Bronx, NY/Trinidad State College) led the Broncs' offense with 14 points and three rebounds while Eric Montalvo (La Joya, TX/La Joya High School) added 13 points. Freshman Thomas Sanders (Sugarland, TX/Home School) scored a career-high 10 points in 16 minutes of action. Alvaidas Gedminas (Plunge, Lithuania/Kirtland Community College) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
The Broncs, who remain winless on the road, will be back in action on Wednesday (Jan. 5) against Air Force in USAFA, CO, with game time slated for 7:00 p.m.
