The University of Texas - Pan American women's volleyball team (4-12) defeated the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Islanders (8-8) in dominating fashion (28-30, 30-19, 30-24, 30-20) on Tuesday (Oct. 11) at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The Lady Broncs lost a tight first game (30-28) and bounced back to win the next three sets convincingly. The match was capped by the Lady Broncs going on a 25-9 rally after being down 11-5 in the middle of the fourth game.
"I just challenged the team after that first loss to step it up and they came through. We really responded after the first match and just steamrolled our way through the next three for the win," said head coach Dave Thorn.
Senior Danielle Holthe (Covina, CA/Bishop Amat Memorial) finished with 22 kills, the highest kill total in her four-year career at UTPA. Holthe led all players in kills while only committing three errors, good for a hitting percentage of .514. She also notched three blocks and one service ace.
Freshman Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/Dobie H.S.) recorded a career-high with 60 assists, leading all players in the match. Blakely also contributed 13 digs for a double-double while also finishing with three service aces.
Junior Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) contributed 21 kills in the winning effort with a .255 hitting percentage as well as eight digs. Chrissie Carrigan (Victoria, British Columbia/Mount Douglass S.S.) notched a match-high 26 digs for the Lady Broncs.
For the Islanders, Anna Machado finished with 19 kills while Paula Araujo recorded 43 assists.
The Lady Broncs will be in action again on Friday (Oct. 14) in Fargo, ND against the North Dakota State Bison.
