Thorn Wins Number 100 as Lady Broncs Defeat Bison

The University of Texas - Pan American women's volleyball head coach Dave Thorn earned win number 100 as the Lady Broncs downed the North Dakota State Bison (1-23) in five sets (24-30, 28-30, 30-22, 30-28, 15-12) on Friday (Oct. 14) in Fargo, ND.

UTPA started the match slowly, losing the first two games, forcing them to play with their backs against the wall the rest of the way. The Lady Broncs won the third game handily and then took two close sets for the victory.

Senior Danielle Holthe (Covina, CA/Bishop Amat Memorial H.S.) led the Lady Broncs with a match-high 21 kills while only committing four errors, good for a .425 hitting percentage. Holthe also notched two service aces.

Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) and Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) both recorded double-doubles (kills-digs) in the match with 20-13 and 20-19 respectively.

Defensively, the Lady Broncs were led by Chrissie Carrigan (Victoria, British Columbia/Mount Douglass S.S.) who recorded a team-high 22 digs. Deanna Schneyer (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Ranch H.S.) notched a team-high five blocks.

Freshman Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) led all players in the match with a career-high 64 assists, surpassing her previous career-high of 60 which she accomplished in the Lady Broncs' last match against Texas A&M - Corpus Christi.

For the Bison, Kari Fagnan recorded a match-high 23 digs, Sheila Parrish finished with 45 assists and Lindsay Shockman notched a match-high eight block assists.

The Lady Broncs finished the match with the advantage in kills, hitting percentage, and assists.

The Lady Broncs continue their road trip on Saturday (Oct. 15) in Brookings, SD against South Dakota State at 7:00 p.m.
