Lady Broncs End Two-Match Win Streak at SDSU

The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball team failed to finalize a sweep on its trip to the Dakotas as the Lady Broncs dropped a three-game set (30-20, 30-18, 30-20) to South Dakota State in Brookings, SD, on Saturday (Oct. 15).

As a team, the Lady Broncs could only muster a .075 hitting percentage, notching 33 kills in 120 total attacks with 24 errors along the way. That hitting percentage output led to the ultimate demise as the Jackrabbits finished with a .311 percentage, collecting 51 kills in 119 total attacks and only 14 miscues.

The other glaring difference in the match came in the battle at the net with the Jackrabbits holding a 12.5 to 6.0 margin in total blocks. South Dakota State collected 21 block assists on the match compared to only 12 at the hands of the Lady Broncs.

In the match, Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) was one of two players to finish with 10 or more kills, finishing with a team-high 11 on the evening. Senior Danielle Holthe (Covina, CA/Amat Bishop Memorial) notched 10 kills with a .333 hitting percentage, committing only two errors in 24 attacks, while also leading the team with five block assists.

Freshman Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) dished out a team-high 29 assists to go along with seven digs and two service aces. Newcomer Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) led the Lady Broncs with 10 digs while Chrissie Carrigan (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Mount Douglas S.S.) and Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) collected eight digs a piece.

Minette Ridenour collected a double-double (kills-digs) in the match with 16 kills and 11 digs while Kristina Martin and Amy Anderson each finished with a hitting percentage of over .400, posting a .478 and .462 mark respectively.

Kristie Klusaw quarterbacked the SDSU offense as she posted a match-high 42 assists on the evening, and Sara Doschadis and Samantha Pearson led the defense, notching 10 digs a piece.

The Jackrabbits improved their record to 11-13 while the Lady Broncs fell to 5-13 on the season.

UTPA will be back in action on Friday (Oct. 21) at the UTPA Fieldhouse against Prairie View A&M with match time set for 7:00 p.m.
