Lady Broncs Dominant in Win over Prairie View A&M

The University of Texas - Pan American women's volleyball team defeated Prairie View A&M on Friday evening (Oct. 21) in straight sets (30-17, 30-20, 35-33).

UTPA blew through the first two games, committing just 11 errors during that stretch. In game three, UTPA led most of the way but slowly gave ground to the Lady Panthers who tied it up at 29. The rest of the match would be a back and forth battle which eventually resulted in the Lady Broncs pulling out a 35-33 win to take the match.

The Lady Broncs had a strong match both offensively and defensively. As a team, they logged a .176 hitting percentage while holding the Lady Panthers to just a .060 percentage.

Senior Danielle Holthe (Covina, CA/Bishop Amat Memorial) led with a match-high 15 kills while also recording two block solos and three block assists. Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol) notched 13 kills and came up with eight digs.

Newcomer Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) served up a match-high 47 assists and recorded 11 digs for a double-double (assists-digs), her fifth of the season.

Chrissie Carrigan (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Mount Douglass S.S.) once again led the Lady Broncs defensively with a match-high 21 digs. Freshmen Deanna Schneyer (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Ranch H.S.) and Carrie Ermel (Franktown, CO/Ponderosa H.S.) recorded nine and eight kills respectively.

For the Lady Panthers, Sharla Cannon and Crystal Stigler led offensively with nine and eight kills apiece while Litiana Vakasausau finished with 20 assists.

The victory brings UTPA's record to 6-13 while the loss brings the Lady Panthers season record to 9-12.

The Lady Broncs are back in action on Saturday (Oct. 22) at 11:00 a.m. against Prairie View A&M and then again at 7:00 p.m. against TCU.
