Lady Broncs Fall to UVSC on Road in Four Sets

The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball team (3-12) dropped its third straight match and fifth consecutive road contest at Utah Valley State (7-7) in Orem, UT, on Saturday (Oct. 8).

The Lady Broncs dropped the first set 28-30 before coming back in the second game to win by the identical score. However; after dropping the second set to the Lady Broncs, Utah Valley State came back to dominate the final two games, 30-16 and 30-19, to come away with the home victory.

UTPA newcomer Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) collected a career-high 22 kills as she recorded a hitting percentage of .269 in the match. She also added seven digs, two blocks and one assist in the loss. The Lady Broncs' outside hitter currently ranks second on the squad in kills (156) and kills per game (2.79).

Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) notched her second straight double-double (assists-digs) with a 49-assist, 18-dig performance against the Wolverines. She also added a trio of blocks and two service aces in the contest. In the past two matches, Blakely has collected 104 assists and 38 digs.

Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) was the only other Lady Bronc hitter to collect double-digits in the kills' category as she registered 11 kills to go along with 14 digs. It was her fifth double-double (kills-digs) of the season and her second consecutive after posting 17 kills and 20 digs against Texas State on Tuesday (Oct. 4).

Senior Danielle Holthe (Covina, CA/Bishop Amat Memorial) made history for the Lady Broncs in the match as she collected three block assists, which ran her career total to 215 career block assists. That mark breaks the old record set by Lisa Yanez of 214 set in 1996.

The Wolverines used a well-balanced striking attack as they had four players reach double digits in kills along with a setter that quarterbacked the squad with an assist total of half-a-century.

Anne Olsen and Jessica Endres each added a team-high 14 kills a piece while both finished with a hitting percentage of over .340 in the match. Brooke Adams and Camie Manwill both contributed with 11 kills for the Wolverines. The combination of Adams and Endres totaled 12 block assists for the Wolverines, who finished with 24 block assists and 12.0 total blocks in the match compared to only 7.0 blocks for UTPA.

All-Independent performer Lacee Koelliker posted an all-around impressive performance as she finished with a match-high 50 assists along with eight digs, five kills, five service aces and five block assists.

The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Tuesday (Oct. 11) at the UTPA Fieldhouse to face interstate rivals Texas A&M - Corpus Christi. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m., and the contest can be heard on the Internet at www.utpabroncs.com/ot/txpa-internet-broadcast.html.
