UTPA Volleyball Falls to Rival Texas A&M - Corpus Christi in Five Sets

The University of Texas - Pan American women's volleyball team (10-17) lost their third straight match (30-24, 21-30, 30-17, 25-30, 16-14) on Friday (Nov. 11) against Texas A&M - Corpus Christi (13-14) in their third match of pool play at the National Independent Tournament in Orem, UT.

Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) finished with a match-high 23 kills while also pitching in eight digs. Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) also turned in a 20+ kill performance with 20 kills to go along with eight digs.

Freshman setter Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) quarterbacked the UTPA offense with her fifth 60+ assist performance of the season, finishing with a match-high 64 assists. Chrissie Carrigan (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Mount Douglass S.S.) was solid on defense with a match-high 23 digs.

Senior Danielle Holthe (Covina, CA/Bishop Amat Memorial H.S.) continues to have a strong tournament, recording 17 kills and two block assists. Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin H.S.) was the only other Lady Bronc with double-digit digs, with 13, while also adding 5 blocks to the losing cause.

The Lady Broncs finished with 9 more kills than the Islanders but were undone by committing 20 more attack errors. UTPA finished with 75 kills and 41 attack errors on the match.

The Lady Broncs will wrap up their season on Saturday (Nov. 12) with two matches. Their first match will be at 8:00 a.m. against the loser of the match between North Dakota State and South Dakota State.
