The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team (0-3) dropped their third straight game of the 2005-06 season to the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns (2-1), 53-43, on Wednesday (Nov. 23) in Lafayette, LA.
The Ragin' Cajuns extended their home winning streak to 17 games with the victory while the Lady Broncs dropped their fifth straight game, dating back to the 2004-05 season. UTPA now holds a 10-26 all-time record against the Ragin' Cajuns.
In the loss, UTPA led for much of the first half, taking a three-point lead at the 17:29 mark on a Dominique Montague (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert H.S.) three-pointer. Montague finished the game with a team-high 13 points on 4-7 shooting, 3-4 from behind the three-point arc.
The Lady Broncs built their lead to an eight-point difference with 13:45 left in the first half on a pair of Tynesha Pierce (Houston, TX/Westfield H.S.) free throws. Pierce ended the night with just four points on 1-7 shooting. UTPA relinquished the lead with just over a minute left in the first half and trailed the rest of the way.
Rachel Jones (Little Rock, AR/Little Rock Central H.S.) pitched in six points in the losing effort while Teshay Winfrey (Houston, TX/Eisenhower H.S.) added five points and five rebounds. Devin Reed (Indianapolis, IN/Cowley County C.C.) quarterbacked the Lady Bronc offense with a game-high four assists.
UTPA took poor care of the ball throughout the game, committing 23 turnovers, compared to just 13 by the Ragin' Cajuns. The Lady Broncs ended the night shooting at a higher percentage than ULL, 35.7% to 27.9%.
The Lady Broncs will next be competing in the CenturyTel Bobcat Classic in San Marcos, TX, hosted by Texas State University on Friday and Saturday (Nov. 25-26). They face Mississippi Valley State on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and Prairie View A&M on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
