Broncs Triumph in Game Three of South Padre Island Invitational

The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball team (2-2) earned a hard-fought 60-57 victory of the Texas Southern University Tigers (1-3) on Friday (Nov. 25) at the South Padre Island Invitational.

The Broncs jumped out to a two-point lead with 17:47 left in the first half on a Dexter Shankle (Katy, TX/James E. Taylor H.S.) jumper. UTPA would lead for the next 32 minutes of the game before surrendering the lead 5:04 left in the contest. Shankle ended the night with nine points on 3-8 shooting, going 2-2 from the free throw line.

UTPA led by as many as 12 after an 8-0 run which was capped by a Larry Sheppard (Baton Rouge, LA/Iowa Western C.C.) lay-up at the 17:02 mark. TSU pulled ahead with 5:04 left on a free throw by Sollie Norwood, giving them their only lead of the second half. The Tigers never trailed by more than four the rest of the way.

The Broncs were led offensively by Johnathan Chatman (Chicago, IL/Sheridan College), who scored a team-high 11 points along with four rebounds. Chatman was 3-10 from the field, 2-8 from behind the three-point arc and 3-4 from the charity stripe.

Colin Lien (Waterloo, IA/Southeastern C.C.) turned in a 10 points, five rebound performance, shooting 50% from the field. Senior Derrick East (Binger, OK/Lookeba-Sickles H.S.) made his presence felt by drawing fouls and on the boards. He led the Broncs with six boards and connected on 7-8 shooting from the free throw line.

UTPA managed to overcome poor shooting to pull out the win, hitting just 30% of their shots from the floor. Quality free throw shooting helped keep the Broncs in the game by making almost twice as many free throws as the Tigers attempted. The Broncs were 25-30 from the charity stripe as compared to TSU, who was 10-13.

The Broncs finished the game with the advantage in rebounds, 39-36, and also in turnovers, committing just 15 as compared the Tigers' 21.

UTPA will compete in their final game of the South Padre Invitational on Saturday (Nov. 26) at 2:30 when they take on the Kent State Golden Flashes.
