The UTPA women's basketball team couldn't overcome a poor shooting display on Friday (Nov. 25) as the Lady Broncs suffered a 70-37 setback to Mississippi Valley State at the CenturyTel/Texas State Classic in San Marcos, TX.
As a team, the Lady Broncs finished shooting 23.1 percent (12-52) from the field, including 1-12 from behind the three-point arc. Senior Stacey Gooden (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) was the Lady Broncs' top scorer, finishing with six points on 2-4 shooting and 2-2 from the free throw line.
In the first half, the Delta Devils took a 29-15 lead after they only shot 30.8 percent (8-26) from the field, but quickly found their shooting touch in the second half as they connected on 52.2 percent (12-23) of their shots. In the final 20 minutes of the game, Mississippi Valley State outscored UTPA by a 41-22 margin.
The Lady Broncs possessed a 40-38 advantage in the rebounding category, including 18 offensive boards, but were unable to convert those into points. The Delta Devils held the upperhand at the free throw line converting on 24 of 33 attempts while the Lady Broncs only connected on 12-22 shots from the charity stripe.
Christen West finished with a game-high 18 points, including 8-10 from the free throw line while Karmethia Mazique finished with 13 points.
With the loss, UTPA dropped its fourth consecutive game of the season and fell to 0-4 while Mississippi Valley State improved to 2-0.
The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Saturday (Nov. 26) at 5:00 p.m. for a rematch against Prairie View A&M.
