The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team recorded its first victory of the season as the Lady Broncs collected a 75-54 triumph over Prairie View A&M at the CenturyTel/Texas State Classic on Saturday (Nov. 26).
The Lady Broncs' defense proved to be the story in the first half as UTPA held Prairie View A&M to 21.4 percent (6-28) shooting from the floor. The Lady Broncs finished 12-29 from the field in the first half and went into intermission with a 42-18 lead.
One of the main reasons for the Lady Broncs' offensive barriage came at the hands of senior Dominique Montague (Gilbert, AZ/Central Arizona), who finished with a game-high 17 points on 6-10 shots including 5-8 from behind the three-point arc.
In the second half, the Lady Broncs continued to keep their distance from the Panthers as they shot 40.7 percent (11-27) along with 10-14 from the free throw line. Despite outscoring the Lady Broncs by a 36-33 margin, Prairie View A&M could not overcome its dismal first half performance.
Stacey Gooden (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) finished with nine points and seven rebounds while Devin Reed (Indianapolis, IN/Cowley County C.C.) and Teshay Winfrey (Houston, TX/Eisenhower H.S.) each finished with nine points.
With the victory, the Lady Broncs improved its record to 1-4 on the season while Prairie View A&M fell to 1-2.
UTPA will be back in action on Dec. 2nd against Kansas State University at the Commerce Bank Wildcat Classic.
