Lady Broncs Earn Straight-Set Victory in Kingsville

The University of Texas - Pan American women's volleyball team (9-14) defeated Texas A&M - Kingsville in straight sets (30-25, 30-27, 30-26) on the Javelinas home court on Thursday (Nov. 3) for their fourth win in their last five matches.

The Lady Broncs held the edge over the Javelinas in hitting percentage in each game, including a .324 percentage in the third and deciding game. UTPA also held the advantage in kills, assists, service aces and digs.

Newcomer Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) paced the Lady Broncs on offense with a team-high 13 kills. To go along with her thirteen kills, Phillips added 10 digs to notch her fourth-straight double-double (kills-digs). On top of that, Phillips recorded a match-high four service aces.

Fellow freshman Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) turned in her second straight double-double (assists-digs) with a match high 40 assists along with 10 digs of her own. Danielle Holthe (Covina, CA/Bishop Amat Memorial H.S.) was the only other Lady Bronc to record double-digits in kills, with 11.

Junior Chrissie Carrigan (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Mount Douglass S.S.) continues to be the Lady Broncs leader in the backcourt with a match-high 16 digs. Carrigan's 429 digs this season puts her third on the single-season digs record list.

Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) had a solid night with eight kills and nine assists while Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin H.S.) contributed nine kills.

The Javelinas were led by Shaday Smith who recorded a match-high 14 kills while Heidi Scheopner had 29 assists and Leslie Petros notched 11 digs.

The Lady Broncs will be on the road again on Saturday as they head to Laredo, TX to take on the Texas A&M - International Dustdevils at 7:00 p.m. in their last game before the National Independent Tournament.
