Box Score

The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball team (2-4) was in Austin, TX on Tuesday night (Nov. 29) as they faced off against the No. 2 ranked Texas Longhorns (6-0) in an 82-54 loss before 9,340 fans at the Frank Erwin Center.

The Broncs took a 9-7 lead at the 15:12 mark on a Zach Trader (LaPorte, TX/LaPorte H.S.) second-chance lay-up. One minute later, Trader would give UTPA a four point lead on a jumper from the left side. The Broncs held the lead for much of the first eight minutes of the game but relinquished the lead for good at the mark.

The Broncs trailed by seven 4:36 left to play in the first half and would cut the lead to five at 2:05 on a Johnathan Chatman (Chicago, IL/Sheridan College) jumper but went in to the locker room trailing Texas by nine. Chatman finished the night with 10 points on 4-13 shooting, 2-8 from behind the arc, while adding four rebounds.

At the half, UTPA was shooting at a higher percentage than the Longhorns (39%-36%) but had less shooting opportunities as a result of being out-rebounded by a 22-16 margin. Eight of Texas' rebounds came on the offensive side of the ball.

In the second half, the Longhorns pulled away for good, outscoring the Broncs by a 19 point margin. Center LaMarcus Aldridge scored a game-high 23 points along with 11 rebounds. P.J. Tucker and Mike Williams also turned in double-double performances for the Longhorns with 19 points-11 rebounds and 10 points- 10 rebounds respectively.

Dexter Shankle (Katy, TX/James E. Taylor H.S.) ended the night tied for the team-high with ten points for the Broncs. Trader finished with a team-leading 10 rebounds while pitching in nine points in the losing effort while Colin Lien (Waterloo, IA/Southeastern C.C.) added eight points and six rebounds.

"We played very hard which is the way our guys are going to play every night. We just have to make sure we improve every time we get a chance. We've got to cut down on offensive rebounds by the opposing teams as well as hanging on to the ball," stated head coach Robert Davenport.

One glaring difference in the match-up was on the boards, where Texas held a 48-33 advantage over the Broncs. The Longhorns ended the night with 21 offensive rebounds, more than the Broncs had defensively. UTPA allowed Texas to score 26 second-chance points and 46 points in the paint.

"We did okay, but we're never going to be satisfied with just playing okay. We always want to get better," added Davenport.

The Broncs next game will be at home in the UTPA Fieldhouse as they host the Air Force Falcons for their second home game of the season on Saturday (Dec. 3).
