With a lot of help from the its newcomers, The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball team outlasted Texas A&M - International in five sets to improve its record to 10-14 on the season in Laredo, TX, on Saturday (Nov. 5).
Freshman Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) recorded 29 kills in the match, which were the fifth most kills in single-match history, to go along with 11 digs. The double-double (kills-digs) was her five consecutive and ninth in her rookie campaign with the Lady Broncs.
Freshman setter Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) recorded a match-high 63 assists and set a program record for the most matches of 60 or more assists as a freshman. She broke the mark set by Katie Burke in 2002. The UTPA newcomer has posted 40 or more assists in 10 of the Lady Broncs' last 11 matches. She also recorded a career-high 25 digs for her 11th double-double (assists-digs) of the season.
Rookie middle blocker Deanna Schneyer (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Bar H.S.) collected 10 blocks in the match, which tied for third most in single-match history. She recorded five solo blocks in the match, which tied for ninth most in single-match history. She also finished with nine kills on the evening.
Junior Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) recorded her ninth double-double (kills-digs) in the match with a 10-kill and career-high 26-dig performance. She also notched three blocks. Chrissie Carrigan (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Mount Douglas S.S.) collected 24 digs and three service aces on the evening.
The Lady Broncs will be back in action at the National Independent Tournament held in Greeley, CO, beginning on Thursday (Nov. 10). UTPA will face IPFW, who enters the contest with a 19-5 record, in its first match of the tournament at 1:00 p.m.
