The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team lost a heartbreaker to the Texas State Bobcats on Saturday (Dec. 10) on a three-pointer at the buzzer for a 67-65 loss.
UTPA trailed most of the game until they took the lead until Devin Reed (Indianapolis, IN/Cowley County Community College) drained a three-pointer to give the Lady Broncs a two point lead.  The Lady Broncs held the lead until the Bobcats went up by two with 39 seconds left to go.
UTPA trailed by as many as nine points, midway through the second half.  The Lady Broncs stormed back with a 16-7 run to tie the game up five minutes later on a Reed jumper.
MaHogany Daniel (Corpus Christi, TX/Mary Carroll H.S.) completed a three point play, connecting on a jumper and then hitting a free throw to give UTPA a one point lead with 13 seconds left in regulation.  The Bobcats promptly called a 30-second timeout and came out with one last play.  Jenna Hoffman threw up an off-balance three-point attempt at the buzzer to knock off the Lady Broncs.
Freshman Teshay Winfrey (Houston, TX/Eisenhower H.S.) led the Lady Broncs in scoring for the fourth straight game, posting a team-high 16 points, shooting 6-14 from the field and 2-5 from behind the three-point arc.  Winfrey also added three rebounds and one assist.
Other Lady Broncs scoring in double-digits were Dominique Montague (Chandler, AZ/Central Arizona College) was 3-4 from the three-point line and poured in 13 points in the losing effort.  Reed finished the game with 10 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal.  Daniel just missed out on a double-double, pulling down nine rebounds and scoring nine points as well as recording a team-high four assists.
The Bobcats were led in scoring by Tamara Thompson who scored a game-high 24 points.  Joyce Ekworamadu added 16 points while Erica Putnam recorded a game-high 15 rebounds.
UTPA shot 40% from the field and 42% from behind the three-point arc.  Texas State barely edged the Lady Broncs in both categories, with a 41% field-goal percentage and from the three-point line, 45%.  The Bobcats held the advantage in rebounds and turnovers, out-rebounding UTPA by six, 44-38, while committing 13 turnovers compared to 16 by the Lady Broncs.
The Lady Broncs lost their fourth-straight, matching their longest losing streak of the season and fell to 1-8 on the year.  The Bobcats, meanwhile, improved their record to 7-0.  The two teams meet again in the Battle at the Border tournament hosted by UTPA on Dec. 29 at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
UTPA takes to the court again on Sunday (Dec. 18) when they travel to Fayetteville, AR to face off against the University of Arkansas Razorbacks.
