The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team dropped the first game of the Commerce Bank Wildcat Classic to the host Kansas State Wildcats by a score of 82-56 on Friday (Dec. 2) in Manhattan, KS.
The Lady Broncs stayed tight with the Wildcats until the 11:13 mark in the first half when Kansas State broke a 9-9 tie on a Twiggy McIntyre three-pointer. In the first nine minutes of action there were five lead changes and one tie. After the McIntyre three, the Wildcats never looked back, pulling away to a 40-28 lead at the half.
Kansas State saw much of their production come off the bench in the form of 54 points from players who were not in the starting lineup. McIntye scored a game-high 22 points on 8-11 shooting, including 6-9 from behind the three-point arc. Two other Wildcats finished the night with double-digits in scoring. Shalee Lehning added 15 points and 12 assists off the bench for a double-double while Claire Coggins pitched in 12 points.
On the night, the Lady Broncs shot 39% (21-53) from the field compared to the Wildcats, who shot at a 47% (31-65) clip. The two teams were evenly matched on the boards, with KSU holding a 37-36 advantage in rebounds. UTPA was 3-10 from behind the three-point line while the Wildcats took nearly half of their shots from behind the arc for a 29% (9-31) shooting percentage.
Teshay Winfrey (Houston, TX/Eisenhower H.S.) scored a career-high 12 points on 5-10 shooting, including 2-2 from the charity stripe, to share the team-high point total with Dominique Montague (Gilbert, AZ/Central Arizona College) who finished 4-8 from the field, 3-7 on three-point attempts. Winfrey also added four rebounds and two steals in the losing cause.
Tynesha Pierce (Houston, TX/Westfield H.S.) scored a season-high nine points and pulled down five rebounds. Devin Reed (Indianapolis, IN/Cowley County C.C.) tied a career-high with seven assists in the contest while MaHogany Daniel (Corpus Christi, TX/Mary Carroll H.S.) set a new career-high in assists with six. Daniel also grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
The Lady Broncs are now 1-2 in tournament play this season and their record falls to 1-5 while Kansas State remains unbeaten with a 5-0 mark.
UTPA will take on the University of Houston Cougars in the consolation game of the Commerce Bank Wildcat Classic on Saturday (Dec. 3) at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan, KS at 3:00 p.m.
