The University of Texas-San Antonio became the first team in 58 games to post over 100 points against the UTPA men's basketball team as the Roadrunners captured a 101-81 victory over the Broncs at the Bird Cage in San Antonio, TX, on Tuesday (Dec. 6).

The last time that an opponent scored over 100 points against the Broncs came on Dec. 4, 2003 when the University of Missouri - Kansas City handed UTPA a 104-80 setback.

For the second consecutive game, the Broncs started off extremely sluggish in the early minutes of the game, which included four missed shots and a trio of fouls, as the Roadrunners took a 14-3 advantage at the 16:22 mark following a lay-in by Andre Owens.

Owens would lead the charge for the Roadrunners as the UTSA senior recorded 15 points on 7-10 shooting to go along with two assists and two steals in the first 20 minutes of the game. He finished with a game-high 20 points in the contest and was one of five Roadrunner players to post double-digits against the Broncs.

The Roadrunners, who connected on 63.9 percent (19-30) of their first half shots, were able to extend the lead to a half-high 21 points following a Chris Thompson rebound off a missed shot by Kano Edwards (Bridgeport, CT/Western Nebraska C.C.) that led to a lay-in on the other end of the floor by Owens.

The Broncs were able to stay in the game thanks in large part to the shooting of sophomore Dexter Shankle (Katy, TX/James E. Taylor H.S.), who paced UTPA with 14 first-half points. The Broncs' top scorer connected on his second three-pointer of the first half at the buzzer to cut the Roadrunners' advantage to 15 points at 50-35.

After trading field goals to open up the second half, the Roadrunners went on a 12-5 run to up their lead to 22 points at 62-40 with 14:00 minutes remaining in the contest following a jumper in the paint from Thompson. Coming off the bench, Thompson would finish with 18 points on 7-9 shooting, including 2-3 from behind the three-point arc, in 17 minutes of action.

The Broncs were able to cut the lead to 15 points once again at the 9:45 mark when Edwards drained a jumper in the paint and converted on the free throw after getting fouled. Edwards nearly missed his first career double-double (points-rebounds) as he finished with a career-high 13 points and eight rebounds.

Following the jumper from Edwards, the Roadrunners' offense exploded as they went on an 18-6 run over the course of the next four minutes to up their lead to 27 points at 87-60 following a lay-in and free throw by Abe Donlon.

In the final 5:45 of the game, the Roadrunners secured their lead as they traded field goals and three-pointers with the Broncs en route to cruising to a 101-81 triumph.

UTSA shot 57.4 percent (35-61) from the field, which was the second consecutive game in which an opponent shot higher than 50 percent in the game against the Broncs. UTPA finished the game shooting 39.7 percent (27-68) from the field and only managed to convert on 61.8 percent (21-34) from the free throw line.

Sophomore Zach Trader (LaPorte, TX/LaPorte H.S.) scored a career-high 15 points to go along with six rebounds and two steals in 24 minutes of action for the Broncs.

Abe Donlon scored 14 points while Eric Young and Kurt Attaway contributed with 12 and 10 points, respectively. The Roadrunners held the advantage on the boards as they grabbed 43 rebounds, including 33 defensive boards which prevented the Broncs from getting very many second chance points in the contest.

With the victory, UTSA evened its record to 3-3 on the season while the Broncs dropped their fourth consecutive contest and fell to 2-6.

The Broncs will be back in action on Saturday (Dec. 10) as they travel to Lubbock, TX, to square-off with Bobby Knight and his Texas Tech Red Raiders. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
