North Texas Downs the Lady Broncs, 73-55

The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team dropped a midweek match-up with the University of North Texas, 73-55, on Thursday (Dec. 8) in Denton, TX.

The Lady Broncs went in to the half trailing by 13. In the second half, they played a closer game but were outscored 35-30.

Recently named Independent Newcomer of the Week Teshay Winfrey (Houston, TX/Eisenhower H.S.) had a big night for the Lady Broncs, scoring a career-high 18 points on 8-14 shooting, including 1-5 from behind the three-point arc and 1-4 from the charity stripe.

The only other Lady Bronc to score in double-digits was MaHogany Daniel (Corpus Christi, TX/Mary Carroll H.S.) with 10 points. Daniel led the team in rebounds with eight while also notching two assists, one block and two steals.

Stacey Gooden (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) added eight points, seven rebounds and three steals while Dominique Montague (Chandler, AZ/Central Arizona College) was 2-4 from behind the three-point line for six points.

The Lady Broncs were undone by 24 turnovers and poor shooting at the free throw line. The team total of 24 turnovers marks the sixth time UTPA has committed 20 or more turnovers in a game, all Lady Bronc losses. From the free throw line, the team shot 35 percent, connecting on 6-17 shots at the charity stripe.

For the Mean Green, Mia Ajekwu led all players with 23 points on 10-11 shooting from the field. Ajekwu also had six rebounds off the bench. UNC center Talicia Sanders recorded three blocks in the contest to go along with eight points and eight rebounds.

UNT shot at a 45% clip as compared to UTPA's 39% shooting from the field. The Mean Green connected on 17-25 from the free throw line, scoring 11 more points on free throws than the Lady Broncs.

North Texas improves its record to 6-1 with the victory while the Lady Broncs fell to 1-7 for the year.

The Lady Broncs will be in action again on Saturday in San Marcos, TX as they take on the Bobcats of Texas State at Strahan Coliseum at 7:00 p.m.
