The University of Texas - Pan American (2-5) baseball team suffered its third loss in this weekend's series against Lamar University (6-0) on Sunday (Feb. 13) at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
LU would take the lead early after a four-run first inning to start the game. The Cardinals would score two more in the top of the third to take the lead to 6-0 over the Broncs. UTPA would finally get to work offensively in the bottom of the third after Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) would hit a RBI single then collected a stolen base to put him in scoring position. Jacob Jones (Kress, TX/Texas Tech University) would single in Alamia and cut the deficit to 6-2.
The Broncs' defense would hold Lamar at six runs through the next three innings of play. With the score 6-3 in favor of the Cardinals, the Broncs would give up three runs on three hits, including one error, in the top of the seventh to take the lead to 9-3. It was in the bottom of the seventh when the Broncs would score six runs to tie the ball game at 9-9 after recording five hits in the inning.
Third baseman Ricky Broyles (Longwood, TX/North Texas C.C.) would lead off the bottom of the seventh with his only hit in the contest. Alfred Padron (Pasadena, TX/Alvin College) doubled to record one of his two hits in three appearances in the game. After walking Alamia, Aaron Flowers (Rowlett, TX/North Texas C.C.) would clean up with a two-run single to right field to take the score to 9-6. The Broncs received two more hits in the inning, and after Zach Gordon (Corpus Christi, TX/Midland College) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, the Broncs would score to tie the game at 9-9.
In the top of the eighth, the Cardinals, who finished with 15 total hits, plated three more runs on three hits to take the score to 12-9. With the lead safe at three runs, Lamar was able to stop a UTPA threat in the bottom half of the inning when Matt Eichel (Grapevine, TX/Grapevine H.S.) grounded into a double play to end the frame.
The Broncs would pitch eight hurlers in the contest, and their troubles on the mound would continue as Lamar would score five runs off of three hits and an error to take the victory 17-9. The Broncs were unable to put themselves in scoring positions within the bottom of the ninth, and came away with no runs.
UTPA's top hitter in the contest was Joe B. Gutierrez (McAllen, TX/Laredo C.C.), who finished with three, while Padron notched two hits. On the mound for the Broncs, Chad Linder (Reklaw, TX/Rusk H.S.) recorded the loss, which takes him to 0-1 on the season. Linder gave up two hits in the game while striking out and walking one.
The Broncs will be back in action on Tuesday (Feb. 15) on the road in San Marcos, TX, against Texas State.
