Four Texas State hurlers combined to toss a four-hitter as the Bobcats (6-1) handed The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team (2-7) a 6-1 setback in San Marcos, TX, on Wednesday (Feb. 16).
TSU starter Scott Moore recorded his first win of the season as he was able to silence the UTPA bats for five innings. The Bobcats right-hander allowed three hits in the contest while striking out five batters.
Down 4-0 in the top of the eighth, the Broncs were able to score their first run in 26 innings against the Bobcats when senior Jacob Jones (Kress, TX/Texas Tech University) drove home Aaron Flowers (Rowlett, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.) on a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-1. Texas State was able to hurl shutouts in its previous two performances against the Broncs. The Bobcats scored a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame on UTPA reliever Ricky Broyles (Longview, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.) to up their lead to 6-1.
Cesar Pena (Harlingen, TX/Harlingen South H.S.) suffered the loss for the Broncs and dropped his record to 0-1 as he tossed three innings, allowing two runs on three hits. He was later relieved by Danny Frisby (Dallas, TX/Bryan Adams H.S.), who allowed one run in three innings of action. Broyles finished up the game, allowing three runs on five hits in two innings of work.
Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.), Mark Rodriguez (San Antonio, TX/Howard J.C.), David Zarate (Corpus Christi, TX/Foy H. Moody) and Zack Smith (Sanger, TX/Sanger H.S.) each singled for the Broncs.
The Bobcats were led offensively by Dominic Ramos, Cassidy Dresch and Jose Rodriguez, who all collected two hits in the game. Heath Keel drilled a home run for the Bobcats.
The Broncs will be back in action on Friday (Feb. 18) at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium for the first of three games against 10th-ranked Arizona. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
