UT - Arlington Throttles Broncs, 13-0

Three UT - Arlington (5-7) hurlers combined to throw a five-hit shutout against The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs (3-10) en route to a 13-0 victory at Clay Gould Park in Arlington, TX, on Friday (Feb. 25).

Mavericks' ace Jake Baxter tossed six innings, giving up four hits while sitting down six Bronc hitters as he upped his record to 3-0 on the season. B.J. Brandenberger tossed the seventh inning shutting down all three UTPA hitters before Dillon Farish came in relief to pitch the final two innings.

UT - Arlington jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in large part to a five-run second inning. Boomer Welles opened up that frame with a solo home run to left field, which ignited the Mavericks' offense. With a pair of runners on base, Scott Williams delivered his only hit on the evening with a triple to right center field to score both runs.

The Mavericks tacked on a run in the third, fourth and fifth innings, which was highlighted by a Ryan Nelson solo home run to right field. After scoring a pair of runs in the sixth innings, UT - Arlington held a 12-0 advantage entering the seventh innings before scoring one in the eighth.

UTPA starter Ryne Foster (Cedar Park, TX/Cedar Park H.S.) suffered the loss for the Broncs and dropped his record to 0-3 on the season as he tossed 1.2 innings, allowing seven runs - three earned - on six hits while striking out six hitters. Danny Frisby (Dallas, TX/Bryan Adams H.S.) came in relief of Foster and allowed two runs in two innings before handing the ball off to Kelly Casares (Missouri City, TX/McClennan J.C.), who hurled 4.1 innings while giving up four runs on five hits.

Offensively - the Mavericks held a 13-5 advantage in the hits' category led by Cary Nelson, Ryan Nelson, Brett Nelson and Scott Williams who all had two hits a piece. UT - Arlington had six extra-base hits compared to only one for the Broncs.

Senior Aaron Flowers (Rowlett, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.) led the Broncs with two hits and has recorded at least one hit in 11 of UTPA's 13 contests this season. Alfred Padron (Pasadena, TX/Alvin C.C.) collected a double in the second inning for his only hit on the evening.

The Broncs didn't help themselves defensively as they committed five errors compared to one for UT - Arlington. On the season, UTPA has committed 32 errors in 13 games while opponents have notched 12 miscues.

UTPA and UT - Arlington will continue its series on Saturday (Feb. 26) with first pitch set for 3:00 p.m.
