The University of Texas - Pan American baseball team suffered its first loss of the season at the UTPA Classic played at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium on Friday (Feb. 4) against Texas State. The Bobcats held the Broncs scoreless and sealed the decision 9-0.
Texas State went to work right away on the Broncs when Heath Keel hit a home run in the top of the second inning to put the Bobcats on the scoreboard 1-0. UTPA's Matt Eichel (Grapevine, TX/Grapevine H.S.) would lead off the Broncs in the bottom of the second and record his first hit of the season, but the `Cats defense would create three quick outs to send them back to bat.
After scoring one run in the top of the third and three in the top of the fourth, the `Cats would push the lead to 5-0 and continue to rally scoring one in the sixth and three more in the eighth to take the lead to 9-0.
UTPA would have five hits on the night, but were unable to convert any of them into runs. Aaron Flower (Rowlett, TX/North Texas C.C.) and Jacob Jones (Kress, TX/Texas Tech) would both record hits in the bottom of the sixth, and Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) would hit one late in the bottom of the eighth before the game would go final 9-0 in nine innings of play.
For the Broncs, Dane Mason (Marlton, NJ/Oklahoma State) posted the loss as he hurled five innings on the mound, giving up five runs - three earned - while giving up six hits and sitting down two TSU hitters. The Broncs didn't help Mason's cause in the field as they recorded four errors in the contest. TSU's Chris Jean recorded the win, striking out five in five innings of action while only allowing two hits and zero runs.
The Broncs moved to 0-1 on the season and will be back in action on Saturday (Feb.5) to play UT-Arlington on Day Two of the UTPA Classic. UTA recorded its first victory in game one of the Classic over Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, 5-4.
