The University of Texas-Pan American baseball program pounded out 15 hits en route to earning Tri-Champion accolades with a 9-7 victory over Texas A&M - Corpus Christi at the UTPA Classic on Sunday (Feb. 6).
Senior Jacob Jones (Kress, TX/Texas Tech University) led the Broncs with a career-high four hits while driving in three runs and scoring a pair of runs. Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) collected two hits, two runs scored and a RBI in the game while Aaron Flowers (Rowlett, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.) notched a pair of hits. UTPA also received two hits a piece from Zach Gordon (Corpus Christi, TX/Midland College) and Alfred Padron (Pasadena, TX/Alvin C.C.).
On the mound, Kelly Casares (Missouri City, TX/McClennan J.C.) came in relief of freshman Bobby Gomez (Falfurrias, TX/Falfurrias H.S.) in the third inning and hurled four while allowing only two runs on three hits. He picked up his first win of the season. Ricky Broyles (Longview, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.) pitched the next two innings, allowing one run on one hit before handing the ball off to closer Tim Haines (Mission, TX/Blinn College), who recorded his second save in as many nights, in the ninth inning.
The Broncs fell behind early to the Islanders, but battled back from a 4-0 deficit after picking up one run in the third inning followed by a six-run fourth inning that UTPA would never relinquish.
Ruben Munoz collected three hits for Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, and leadoff hitter Jaim Landin finished with two hits while scoring three runs and driving in one. Jorge Mico also added two hits for the Islanders.
The Broncs share the tri-title of the UTPA Classic with UT - Arlington and Texas State, who all finished with an identical 2-1 record. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi went winless in the tournament with a 0-3 record.
UTPA will take its first road trip of the season on Wednesday (Feb. 9) when the Broncs travel to Austin, TX, for a single-game against The University of Texas. Last season, the Longhorns advanced to the NCAA Division I National Championship Game before falling to Cal State - Fullerton. Game time between the Broncs and Longhorns is slated for 2:00 p.m.
