Box Score

The University of Texas - Pan American baseball team dropped a 7-1 decision to top-ranked Texas in Austin, TX, on Wednesday (Feb. 9).

The defense of the Longhorns was strong from the start sending the Broncs back to the field with quick outs in the first two innings of play. They also went to work quickly at-bat, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third to take an early 4-0 lead. UTPA would respond defensively with a three out defensive run of their own in the bottom of the fourth, but were unable to find success at bat. The Broncs recorded six hits in the contest, but suffered the setback giving up nine hits to the Longhorns.

The Broncs would finally find some offensive momentum in the seventh inning after Joe B. Gutierrez (McAllen, TX/Nikki Rowe H.S.) hit one up the middle to record the RBI single, and the only run the Broncs would find in the contest. The Longhorns would rally for one more run in the bottom of the seventh to take the 7-1 lead, and cruise on to victory.

Cesar Pena (Harlingen, TX/Harlingen South H.S.) was the leading hitter for UTPA recording two of the team's six hits in the contest while Gutierrez would record the team's single RBI. Zach Gordon (Corpus Christi, TX/Midland College), Alfred Padron (Pasadena, TX/Alvin College), and Aaron Flowers (Rowlett, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.) combined for the other hits recorded in the performance for the Broncs.

On the mound, Dane Mason (Marlton, NJ/Oklahoma State) suffered the loss pitching 5.0 innings for the Broncs and giving up six hits to the Longhorns. The loss took his record to 0-2 on the season while Texas's Kenn Kasparek picked up his first win on the year.

The Broncs are now 2-2 on the season and will be back in action against Lamar University starting Friday (Feb. 11) and continuing throughout the weekend for a three-game series.
