The University of Texas-Pan American (9-19) baseball team held off the late-inning surge of the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Islanders (18-12-1) en route to picking up a 5-4 victory at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium on Tuesday (Mar. 22).
UTPA starter Aaron Guerra (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) improved his record to 4-1 on the season as he tossed seven innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits. He sat down four Islander hitters and did not surrender a walk in the contest.
The Broncs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Mark Rodriguez (San Antonio, TX/Howard J.C.) drew a bases loaded walk to drive in his first of three runs in the contest. UTPA would add another run on a Matt Eichel (Grapevine, TX/Grapevine H.S.) groundout.
UTPA would take the lead at 3-2 in the fifth inning when Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) crossed home plate after an error on the Islanders' defense. Rodriguez would once again come up big for the Broncs as he drilled a two-run single up the middle to give UTPA a 5-2 lead.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi would score a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning on Guerra, but were held scoreless over the last two innings. The duo of Rodriguez and Chad Linder (Reklaw, TX/Rusk H.S.) helped cement the victory for the Broncs.
Leading the Broncs' offense was Alamia and Aaron Flowers (Rowlett, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.), who both recorded a pair of hits and runs scored in the game.
Josh Mitchell fell to 3-4 on the season for the Islanders as he allowed three runs in two innings of action. Jaime Landin collected three hits for the Islanders.
The Broncs will be back in action on Mar. 29th when UTPA travels to UT - San Antonio for a two-game series with the Roadrunners. First game is set for 2:00 p.m.
