Box Score
The University of Texas - Pan American baseball team suffered a last at-bat defeat against the University of Texas - San Antonio on Tuesday (Mar. 29) in San Antonio, TX. The 6-5 defeat moves the Broncs to 9-20 on the season.
The Broncs started their offense early scoring one run in the first inning due to a UTSA fielding error. The error would put lead-off hitter Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/North Edinburg H.S.) on base, and after two flyouts, he would be in scoring position with Zach Smith (Sanger, Tx/Sanger H.S.) at-bat to hit the RBI single. The hit was one of five that Smith posted for a career performance.
The Roadrunners would respond quickly with a run of their own in the bottom of the second to tie the score 1-1. The Broncs would then score one run off of two hits in the fourth inning where Smith would lead-off the inning with a home run to right center field. They would score again in the fifth with Smith going to work again hitting a single to advance Aaron Flowers (Rowlett, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.) to third where he would then score off a UTSA wild pitch.
The lead would stay in the hands of the Broncs through the sixth inning of play before they would score another run in the seventh after Jacob Jones (Kress, TX/Texas Tech University) hit a home run to center field. With the Broncs up 4-1, the Roadrunners would then catch fire offensively scoring four runs off of four hits in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead 5-4.
After both teams went scoreless in the eighth, the Broncs were able to tie the game with their last chance at-bat in the ninth due to a fielding error and another wild pitch by the Roadrunners. However, UTSA would also take advantage with the last at-bat scoring off an RBI double to end the game and record the victory 6-5.
Smith would add two RBI's to his career-high five hits while Jones would record two hits and score two runs in the contest. UTSA was lead by Ryan Crew who hit a three-run home run in the seventh to take over the lead for his team.
On the mound, UTPA's Chad Linder (Reklaw, TX/Rusk H.S.) suffered the loss in his 2.0 innings pitched. The defeat moves him to 0-4 on the mound this season. Jason Vecchio recorded the win for the Roadrunners, pitching 1.1 innings while facing five batters.
The Broncs will play game two of the series against UTSA on Wednesday (Mar. 30) with a 2:00 p.m. start time at Roadrunner Field.
