Box Score
The University of Texas - San Antonio (10-17) collected 11 extra base hits, including a quartet of home runs, en route to hammering The University of Texas - Pan American (9-21), 14-3, at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio, TX, on Wednesday (Mar. 30).
The Broncs were able to strike first against the Roadrunners in the second inning when Mark Rodriguez (San Antonio, TX/Howard J.C.) walked then advanced to second following a wild pitch. He would later be plated on a double down the leftfield line by freshman J.P. Mackie (McAllen, TX/Sharyland H.S.).
That lead would be short and sweet as UTSA took advantage, 2-1, in the bottom half of the second frame. Mike McKennon would start things out for the Roadrunners as he doubled to right-centerfield then came home on a two-run blast by Lee Todesco. McKennon finished with three hits, three runs scored and a pair of RBI while Todesco collected three hits and four RBI.
The UT - San Antonio offense roughed up the entire UTPA pitching staff, beginning with UTPA starter Kelly Casares (Missouri City, TX/McClennan J.C.), who suffered the loss as he allowed five runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings of action. He fell to 1-1 on the season. Four of the six hurlers that the Broncs sent to the mound would allow two or more runs in the contest.
The Broncs were able to cut the lead down to three runs at 5-2 in the fifth inning when Jacob Jones (Kress, TX/Texas Tech University) connected on his second home run of the season. Zach Smith (Sanger, TX/Sanger H.S.) followed up with a double to right field, but UTSA reliever Josh Ruffin got Rodriguez to strike out and Matt Eichel (Grapevine, TX/Grapevine H.S.) to fly out to end the scoring threat.
The Roadrunners' offense went on a scoring barrage, plating nine runs over the course of the next three innings. UT - San Antonio, who pounded out 21 hits in the game, received home runs from J.R. Voyles, Ryan Crew and McKennon during that stretch.
A single-run in the eighth inning for the Broncs cut the score to 14-3, but the damage had already been done to UT - Pan American. Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) and Aaron Flowers (Rowlett, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.) each led the squad with two hits a piece for the Broncs.
The Broncs will be back in action on Friday (Apr. 1) when they host 23rd-ranked Coastal Carolina at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium for a three-game series. First game is set for 7:00 p.m.
