Broncs Finish 1-1 at Al Ogletree Classic

The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team (4-12) earned a split in its first two games at the Al Ogletree Classic on Saturday (Mar. 5) at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

UT - Pan American Broncs 5, Sam Houston State 1
Junior Aaron Guerra (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) allowed one run on five hits in eight innings of action to pick up the victory and up his record to 2-0 on the season. The Broncs' right-hander struck out six hitters in the process.

The Broncs got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when Mark Rodriguez (San Antonio, TX/Howard J.C.) connected on his first of two hits in the game to drive home Zach Gordon (Corpus Christi, TX/Midland College) to give UTPA a 1-0 lead. A three-run sixth inning would take the score to 4-0 in favor of UTPA.

Rodriguez along with Aaron Flowers (Rowlett, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.) and Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) would each finish with a pair of hits while senior Matt Eichel (Grapevine, TX/Grapevine H.S.) added a double and scored two runs.

Zach Duncan dropped his record to 0-2 as he tossed 5.2 innings, giving up three runs - all earned - on four hits while walking a pair of hitters. Karl Krailo drove in SHSU's only run of the game with a RBI single in the seventh inning, which scored Jonathan Stone.

University of Illinois 3, UT - Pan American Broncs 0
In their second game, the Broncs' offense was stifled by the pitching of Brian Blomquist, who hurled a complete game two-hitter as Illinois blanked UTPA, 2-0.

Toby Gardenhire connected on a two-run double in the top half of the second inning to give the Fighting Illini a 2-0 advantage. Illinois would tack on another run in the third when Dusty Bensko drove in Mike Rohde.

Alfred Padron doubled for the Broncs. Dane Mason suffered the loss and dropped his record to 1-4 on the season, giving up three runs on four hits in three innings of action. Freshman Bobby Gomez did a fantastic job in relief shutting down the Illinois' offense. He did not surrender a run in six innings of action and allowed a single hit.

Birmingham-Southern 2, UT - San Antonio 0
Brandon Hynick tossed a complete game four-hitter as Birmingham-Southern blanked UT - San Antonio, 2-0, in game one of the Al Ogletree Classic on Saturday (Mar. 5).

Adam Tucker drove in Salem Tripp in the third inning to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Jonathan Sanford gave Birmingham - Southern a little insurance in the fifth inning when he notched a RBI single, scoring Pat Mizerany.

Caleb Barton was the hard-luck pitcher for UTSA as he allowed both run on four hits in six innings of work. He dropped his record to 0-2 on the season.

With the victory, Birmingham Southern improved to 5-4 while the Roadrunners dropped to 1-12 on the season.

The Al Ogletree Classic concludes on Sunday (Mar. 6) with Sam Houston State and Illinois at 10:00 a.m. The Broncs will have their second consecutive doubleheader, playing Birmingham-Southern at 2:00 p.m. followed by UT - San Antonio at 6:00 p.m. in the Classic's finale.
