The University of Texas - Pan American baseball team split a doubleheader against Prairie View A&M Tuesday (Mar. 8) in Prairie View, TX. The Broncs dropped a 9-6 decision in the first game, but rebounded to record the 9-5 win in the second.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Broncs would go down 9-1 early as they gave up a six-run inning to the Panthers in the bottom of the fourth. UTPA would cut into the deficit with a three-run inning of their own in the fifth to take the score to 9-4 headed into the sixth inning. After keeping the Panthers scoreless in the seventh, the Broncs would score two more runs, but it was not enough as they suffered the setback, 9-6.
Matt Eichel (Grapevine, TX/Grapevine H.S.) notched two hits in the contest while centerfielder, Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) recorded three RBI. Cesar Pena (Harlingen, TX/Harlingen South H.S.) pitched the loss taking him to 0-2 on the season.
In game two, the Broncs went to work at-bat scoring one run in the top of the first inning, and then sent two more home in the second inning to take the early 3-0 lead. The Panthers then responded to tie the game in the bottom of the third before the Broncs would go up again by two runs, 5-3, headed into the fifth inning.
PVAMU would continue to match the efforts of the Broncs scoring two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. The Broncs would add two more runs to take the score to 7-5 headed into the bottom of the sixth where their defense would hold the Panthers scoreless headed into the final inning of play. It was there that UTPA would push the advantage to four runs and record the 9-5 win.
The Broncs recorded seven hits to the Panthers six. Leading the way was Alfred Padron (Pasadena, TX/Alvin C.C.) with two hits in the contest and Otis Powers (Brownsville, TX/Simon Rivera H.S.) who notched two RBI.
Recording the win on the mound was senior Ricky Broyles (Longview, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.) who recorded three strikeouts in his 2.0 innings pitched to take his record to 1-0 on the season.
The Broncs record moves to 7-14 as they head into this weeks three game series with Creighton University starting Thursday (Mar. 10) with a 7:00 p.m. start time at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
