The University of Texas-Pan American baseball program took advantage of nine runs in the first two innings of the game en route to a 15-6 victory over 23rd-ranked Coastal Carolina on Friday (Apr. 1) at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Down 1-0 in the bottom half of the first inning, the Broncs came back to score three runs highlighted by a two-out, two-run double by senior catcher Matt Eichel (Grapevine, TX/Grapevine H.S.).
The Broncs expanded on their 3-1 lead in the bottom half of the second frame when they scored six runs after taking advantage of three Chanticleers' miscues. With bases loaded and nobody out, J.P. Mackie (McAllen, TX/Sharyland H.S.) hit a grounder to third base where Coastal's Mike Costanzo threw wide left of catcher Mike Fuentes, which allowed two runners to score. That error would be followed by four more runs, including a two-out, RBI-single by Eichel, who finished with three hits and five RBI in the contest.
Coastal Carolina would rebound to score three runs in the top half of the third inning after Michael DeJesus plated a pair of runs on a double to left field. His hit would cut the Chanticleers' deficit to five runs.
The Broncs and Chanticleers traded runs in the fourth inning, and UTPA added an insurance run in the fifth. UTPA would strike for four runs in the seventh inning, which was once again capped by a two-run single by Eichel that allowed Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) and Jacob Jones (Kress, TX/Texas Tech University).
Chad Linder (Reklaw, TX/Rusk H.S.) picked up his first victory of the season as he came in relief of starter Ryne Foster (Cedar Park, TX/Cedar Park H.S.) and allowed one run in 5.1 innings of action. He gave up a four hits and finished with four strikeouts in the contest.
Ricky Broyles (Longview, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.) collected two hits and two RBI in the game for the Broncs while Alamia and Aaron Flowers (Rowlett, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.) scored three runs a piece.
Jon Foisy notched a pair of hits and runs for Coastal Carolina while DeJesus and Adam Vrable each added two hits.
Andy DeLaGarza suffered the loss for Coastal Carolina and dropped his record to 2-2 on the season after lasing one inning, giving up five runs - three earned - on two hits.
UTPA improved its record to 10-21 on the season and snapped a two-game losing streak, and Coastal Carolina dropped to 21-7, including its last three contests.
The Broncs and Chanticleers will resume their three-game series on Saturday (Apr. 2) with game time set for 6:15 p.m. at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
