Box Score
Louisiana - Lafayette's Jonathan Lucroy connected on a two-run double in the bottom half of the seventh inning to give the 20th-ranked Ragin' Cajuns a 5-3 victory over The University of Texas-Pan American on Sunday (Apr. 10) at M.L. `Tigue' Moore Field.
The Ragin' Cajuns scored a run in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead before the Broncs would reach the scoreboard in the fourth inning. UTPA loaded the bases in the that frame before ULL's Jeremy Whipple pegged Ricky Broyles (Longview, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.) to allow Otis Powers (Brownsville, TX/Simon Rivera H.S.) to score from third base.
The Broncs were able to tie the score at 3-3 in the sixth inning when Cesar Pena (Harlingen, TX/Harlingen South H.S.) drilled a two-run double to right field, which plated both Zach Gordon (Corpus Christi, TX/Midland College) and Jacob Jones (Kress, TX/Texas Tech University). Pena finished with three hits on the day, including a pair of RBI. UTPA would fail to place a run on the scoreboard for the remainder of the game as Louisiana - Lafayette went on to win 5-3.
The Ragin' Cajuns used nine pitchers in nine innings on Sunday with Jeremy Collins picking up his first career victory. He gave up two hits, but struck out three batters in a single-inning of work.
Ryne Foster (Cedar Park, TX/Cedar Park H.S.) suffered the loss for UTPA and dropped his record to 0-5, allowing five runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings of action. He struck out four hitters on the day while surrendering four walks.
UTPA out-slugged the Ragin' Cajuns by an 11-9 margin. Aaron Flowers (Rowlett, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.), Powers and Gordon all collected two hits a piece. Gordon also added his eighth double of the season in the contest.
