UTPA Sweeps Two Matches

The University of Texas - Pan American men's tennis took 7-0 sweeps in two matches over the weekend (April 8-9) to improve its record to 5-7 on the season. Senior Jeremy Salvo (Conquitlam, B.C., Canada/Centennial Secondary) finished the weekend with a 4-0 record, not dropping a match in singles or doubles play.

Salvo took responsibility for play in the top single flight in the match against Texas Southern, and battled back from down a set to record the victory 6-7, 6-1 and 6-1. The win would take him to 3-4 when playing in the No. 1 singles spot this season.

In doubles play, Salvo paired with teammate Rehman Esmail (Conquitlam, B.C., Canada/North Carolina State) to pick up another win with an 8-1 win over TSU's Ivan Avila and Matuesz Wodzinski. UTPA would take the match 7-0 after taking the double point and then sweeping the singles matches.

The team would then face Prairie View A&M and sweep their second match of the weekend with another 7-0 showing. Salvo would take an easy win in the No. 2 singles position defeating PVAMU's Nicolas Bateman, 6-0 and 6-1. In doubles, Salvo and Esmail would post an 8-3 win over the Panthers to take their doubles record to 9-3 this season.

Gary Bianco (Annecy, France/Lycee Berthollet) played in the No. 1 singles spot for the Broncs taking the victory, 6-2 and 6-2, and also won in doubles paired with Oliver Steil (Brunssum, The Netherlands/SF North International School) with a score of 8-3.

The Broncs will be back in action on Saturday (April 16) in a dual match against Trinity University at 2:00 p.m. in San Antonio, TX.
