A late-inning surge in the first of two games allowed The University of Texas-Pan American (11-28) baseball program to earn a split with Dallas Baptist (22-16) on Friday (Apr. 15) at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The Broncs used a three-run ninth inning to come from behind and hand the Patriots a 3-2 setback in the first game of the doubleheader.
Dallas Baptist hurler Randall Taylor took a no-hitter into the ninth inning until senior Jacob Jones (Kress, TX/Texas Tech University) lined a shot down the right field line for a double to open the frame. Jones would score from second two hitters later when Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) fired a shot into leftfield for a RBI single.
The Broncs were able to tie the game at 2-2 when Zach Smith (Sanger, TX/Sanger H.S.) sent a ball to right-centerfield for a sacrifice fly, which would allow Alamia to score from third base. Dallas Baptist made a pitching change and brought in Stuart Sutherland, who proceeded to peg a pair of Bronc hitters.
With bases loaded and two outs, Sutherland hit his second batter of the inning in senior Matt Eichel (Grapevine, TX/Grapevine H.S.), which would send Joe B. Gutierrez (McAllen, TX/Laredo C.C.) across home plate for the game-winning run.

The Patriots went back to work in the top half of the sixth inning and added another insurance run to take the score to 4-1. In that frame, Garrett Baker led off with a triple to right field then scored when Austin Krum singled up the middle.
