The University of Texas - Pan American baseball team took the 10-9 victory over Dallas Baptist on Saturday (April 16) after a late-inning home run from Alfred Padron (Pasadena, TX/Alvin C.C.) would give the Broncs the solo run advantage headed into the ninth inning of play.
The Broncs had a strong surge offensively scoring five runs in the opening inning of play off of six hits, including a two-run double from Otis Powers (Brownsville, TX/Simon Rivera H.S.). J.P. Mackie (McAllen, TX/Sharyland H.S.) also helped build the early lead recording one of his game-high three RBI in the opening frame.
After a one-run inning in the second for DBU, the Broncs would head into the third frame leading 5-1. It was in the third inning where the Patriots went to work scoring six runs off of seven hits, including three two-baggers in the inning. The strong hitting performance would capture the lead 7-5, but the Broncs would quickly tie things up when Mackie hit a home run with one on base to tie the score 7-7 before the end of the inning.
In the fourth inning, the Broncs would hold off the Patriots defensively while recording one run to recapture the lead, 8-7. The lead would change again in the top of the fifth where DBU would record two runs to take the score to 9-8. After a double from Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.), Padron would single to advancing Alamia to scoring position. Padron would then fail in his attempt to steal second, but Alamia was able to score on the play to tie the game at 9-9.
After a scoreless inning for both teams in the seventh, the Broncs would then go up by a run, 10-9, when Padron led-off in the eighth inning with a home run to post his second hit in the contest. The Patriots were unable to get a hit in their last at-bats and suffered the defeat.
The Broncs saw Alamia finish with a perfect performance recording five hits in his five at-bats during the game. UTPA would post 15 hits in the game to the Patriots' 12 en route to the victory.
On the mound for the Broncs, Tim Haines (Mission, TX/Blinn College) closed the game and recorded the win in his 1.1 innings on the mound. The win was his first this year taking him to 1-2 on the season. DBU's Brice Well suffered the loss moving him to 2-2.
The win takes the Broncs to 12-28 with seven games left at home before finishing off the season with 11 road games, including three more against Dallas Baptist. UTPA will be back in action against UTSA on Tuesday (April 19) at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium with a 7:00 p.m. start time.
