Box Score
A bases-loaded double in the ninth inning plated three runs allowing 23rd-ranked Coastal Carolina to escape with a 5-2 victory over The University of Texas-Pan American on Saturday (Apr. 2) at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
In the final frame, UTPA went to reliever Ricky Broyles (Longview, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.) on the mound to relieve starter Aaron Guerra (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.). Michael DeJesus opened up the frame with a single to centerfield then was sacrificed to second by Mike Costanzo. With one out, Danny Morgan delivered a fly ball to right field that was dropped by Jacob Jones (Kress, TX/Texas Tech University), allowing both runners to advance. Coastal Carolina was able to load the bases when the Broncs intentionally walked Tommy Baldridge.
Broyles struck out Jon Foisy for the second out of the inning. With two outs and a full count on Dom Duggan, the Coastal Carolina sophomore sent a fastball to centerfield that cleared the bases and gave the Chanticleers a 5-2 lead.
Coastal Carolina grabbed the early 1-0 in the top half of the third inning when Chris Todd singled to right field, scoring Josh Eachues from second base. It was the second straight game that Chanticleers grabbed the early lead from UTPA.
The Broncs responded in the bottom of the third when Aaron Flowers (Rowlett, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.) and Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) executed a perfect first and third double steal, which allowed Flowers to cross home plate. Alamia would give the Broncs a 2-1 lead after he scored from second base on a Chanticleer error off the bat of J.P. Mackie (McAllen, TX/Sharyland H.S.).
Coastal Carolina tied the game in the fifth inning when Chris Raber opened up the frame with a double to centerfield. Two batters later, Duggan singled to left field, which allowed Raber to cross the plate and tie the contest at 2-2.
The Broncs received eight strong innings from Guerra as the right-hander allowed two runs and six hits over that span. He struck out a season-high nine hitters, including five of the first six hitters he faced en route to earning the no-decision.
Senior Matt Eichel (Grapevine, TX/Grapevine H.S.) collected a team-high three hits in the game and registered his second consecutive three base knock performance against Coastal Carolina. Mackie and Zach Gordon (Corpus Christi, TX/Midland College) each added two hits a piece for the Broncs.
Broyles picked up the loss and fell to 0-1 on the season as he allowed three runs on two hits in 2/3 innings of action.
With the victory, Coastal Carolina improved to 22-8 and snapped a three-game losing streak while UTPA fell to 10-22.
The Broncs and Chanticleers will conclude their three-game set on Sunday (Apr. 3) with game time set for 10:00 a.m. at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
