The University of Texas - Pan American men's tennis team saw the season come to a close with a 4-0 loss to University of Texas - San Antonio at the Southland Conference Tournament on Friday (April 22) in San Antonio, TX.
The Broncs played the Roadrunners close in the No. 1 doubles fight as senior Jeremy Salvo (Conquitlam, B.C., Canada/Centennial Secondary) and junior Rehman Esmail (Conquitlam, B.C., Canada/North Carolina State) dropped a 8-5 decision. The point would then go in favor of the Roadrunners as they finished off the No. 3 doubles team of Armando Martinez (San Antonio, TX/West Texas A&M) and Nik Porter (Tunbridge Wells, England/Bennett Memorial School), 8-2.
In singles play, Salvo dropped his match, 6-4 and 6-4, in the No. 2 spot, while Porter fell, 7-5 and 6-4, in the No. 3 flight. The deciding match would come when UTSA's Hetori Chaves defeated Esmail in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. The match would be decided at that point suspending the play of the other three singles matches. UTPA dropped the 4-0 decision taking them to a final record of 6-10 on the season.
"I felt like our tournament showing was much like all the conference matches we played this season. We played good in every match, but were unable to pull ahead in the close matches. The guys really battled in every match, and we just fell short," commented head coach Paul Soliz.
The Southland Conference Tennis Tournament will continue throughout the weekend with the championship match on Sunday (April 24).
