Dallas Baptist University pounded out 17 hits en route to hammering the University of Texas-Pan American baseball team, 13-3, on Thursday (Apr. 28) at Patriot Field in Dallas, TX.
The Patriots started their abuse on the UTPA pitching staff in the first inning by scoring a pair of runs and never stopping throughout the remainder of the game. Dallas Baptist scored at least one run in the first seven innings of the game.
The Broncs put together a late rally when Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) tripled to right field then was driven home on a groundout by senior Aaron Flowers (Rowlett, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.). The hit was a milestone for Alamia as he became the program's all-time leader in hits collecting his 194th career base knock, which surpassed the mark of 193 set by Marco Garza in 2004.
Following a double by Jacob Jones (Kress, TX/Texas Tech University), Zach Smith (Sanger, TX/Sanger H.S.) connected on his fourth home run - second pinch hit - on the season when he blasted a shot over the right field fence to score both runs.
Jimmy Thoma did his best imitation of Smith as he connected on a pinch-hit home run of his own in the bottom half of the seventh inning to take the Patriots' lead to 13-3. The Patriots would hold UTPA scoreless in the ninth inning to preserve the victory.
Aaron Guerra (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) suffered the loss for the Broncs as he surrendered seven runs - four earned - over 2.2 innings of action. He allowed 10 hits in the game and was only able to strike out a trio.
With the victory, Dallas Baptist improves its record to 25-20 on the season while UT - Pan American fell to 14-34 in the 2005 campaign.
The Broncs and Patriots will continue their series on Friday (Apr. 29) at Patriot Field with game time slated for 6:00 p.m.
