April 5, 2005

Box Score

The University of Texas - Pan American baseball team dropped a 6-5 decision to Texas A&M - Corpus Christi on Tuesday (April 5) at the Islander Field in Corpus Christi, TX.

The Broncs jumped off to a quick start scoring three runs to open the game, and take the 3-0. The top of the line-up for the Broncs came out swinging as both Zach Gordon (Corpus Christi, TX/Midland College) and Matt Eichel (Grapevine, TX/Grapevine H.S.) hit RBI doubles to control the game early. The squad would score three runs in three hits all of them unearned due to an early Islanders' error.

TAMUCC would score one run in the bottom of the first to take the score to 3-1 headed into the second inning. The Islanders would produce a three-run inning of their own in the fourth to take the lead, and build on it in the bottom of the sixth to put the Broncs down 6-3.

Both teams would remain scoreless in the seventh inning, and the Broncs would then rally a come back with an Eichel two-run home run to right field to bring them within one at 6-5. However, that was as close as they would come as the ninth inning came to a close due to the solid defense of TAMUCC.

Leading the Broncs in the contest was Eichel with two hits and three RBI, and Mark Rodriguez (San Antonio, TX/Howard J.C.) with two hits and one RBI. The Broncs recorded seven hits to the Islanders' 13 in the contest while both teams recorded one error.

On the mound for UTPA, Daniel Frisby (Dallas, TX/Bryan Adams H.S.) suffered the loss taking him to 1-1 on the season. TAMUCC's Josh Mithcell picked up the win to improve to 4-6 on the mound.

The loss takes the Broncs to 10-24 on the season with a three-game series against Louisiana - Lafayette approaching this weekend. The team will face the Ragin' Cajuns starting on Friday (April 8) with a 6:30 p.m. start time.
