Broncs Drop to Ragin' Cajuns, 12-3

The University of Texas - Pan American baseball team dropped in the first of a three-game series against 20th-ranked University of Louisiana - Lafayette, 12-3, on Friday (April 8) in Lafayette, LA.

The Ragin' Cajuns defense held the Broncs scoreless in the first six innings of play while they went to work offensively with a six-run inning in the bottom of the third to take the advantage early. The Broncs would post their two errors in the contest in that inning where the Ragin' Cajuns would build the lead to 7-0 headed into the fourth inning of play.

Louisiana - Lafayette would plate four more runs in the contest before the seventh inning where the Broncs finally rallied for three runs to take the score to 11-3. Due to two Cajun errors, all three runs from the Broncs would be unearned. Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/North Edinburg H.S.) would hit a double in the inning to earn one of the Broncs two RBI in the contest. Alamia also lead the team in hits with three in the contest, two of them going for multiple bases.

UTPA then gave up one more run to Louisiana - Lafayette in the bottom of the eighth before the game would go final after the Cajuns' defense created three quick outs in the ninth giving them the victory 12-3.

Ricky Broyles (Longview, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.) was the only other Bronc to finish with an RBI, while he recorded one of the Broncs' eight hits on the night. The Ragin' Cajuns were one hit shy of a 20-hit performance with 19 in the game, led by Josh Landry, who finished with four hits and three RBI.

The pitching staff for the Ragin' Cajuns finished with 12 strikeouts, while walking only one. Kevin Ardoin posted his seventh win on the season, while the Broncs Aaron Guerra (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) suffered the loss to move to 4-2 on the mound this year. The loss takes the Broncs to 10-25 while Lafayette moves to 27-6 on the season.

The Broncs will play their second game in the series on Saturday (April 9) starting at 2:05 p.m.
