The University of Texas - Pan American baseball team broke a seven game losing streak with a 4-1 win over the University of New Orleans, on Friday (May 13), in New Orleans, LA.
The Broncs were able to take an 1-0 lead early as senior Jacob Jones (Kress, TX/Texas Tech University) collected an RBI to score teammate Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/North Edinburg H.S.) in the opening frame. Alamia would finish the game collecting three of the team's nine hits in the contest.
After both teams went scoreless through the next three innings, the Broncs would score another run after Joe B. Gutierrez (McAllen, TX/Nikki Rowe H.S.) doubled to lead off in the fifth inning followed by a Privateers error that would advance him home, and take the score to 2-0.
The Broncs defense would continue to leave UNO scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning when the Privateers would finally score one run off of four hits in the inning. UNO finished the contest with seven total hits, but would have trouble turning them into runs, while the Broncs defense turned five double plays to keep them at only one run throughout the remainder of play.
UTPA would post two more runs in the late innings as Matt Eichel (Grapevine, TX/Grapevine H.S.) hit a home run to left center in the eighth, followed by a run in the ninth inning off of another UNO error.
On the mound for the Broncs, Ricky Broyles (Longview, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.) would record his second win on the season moving his record to 2-2. In his 6.2 innings pitched, he threw seven strikeouts while walking two batters in the contest. UNO's Ryan Myer picked up the loss taking him to 1-7 this year.
The win takes UTPA to 15-37 with two more game remaining in the season. The team will play the second game in the three-game series with New Orleans on Saturday (May 14) at 1:00 p.m.
