The University of New Orleans scored five runs in the bottom half of the eighth inning to steal a 7-5 victory at the hands of The University of Texas-Pan American at Maestri Field in New Orleans, LA, on Sunday (May 15).
The Privateers used five base knocks, including three extra base hits, in the eighth inning to overcome a 5-2 deficit to take the lead. New Orleans received its biggest blast when Jason Schwab doubled to left center field to score both Josh Jones and Ryan Meyer to take the lead at 6-5. The Privateers roughed up UTPA closer Tim Haines (Mission, TX/Blinn College) in that frame for five runs on four hits.
The Broncs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Zach Gordon (Corpus Christi, TX/Midland College) connected on his first of two doubles in the game then was plated on a UNO fielding error. UTPA added a pair of runs in the third inning on a RBI single by Gordon and a wild pitch that scored Aaron Flowers (Rowlett, TX/Northeast Texas C.C.).
In the fifth inning, UTPA extended its lead to 4-1 on a RBI single by Jacob Jones (Kress, TX/Texas Tech University), which scored the second of Flowers' three runs. Jones struck again in the seventh inning when he doubled to right field to score Flowers.
Jones finished the game with three hits and a pair of RBI while Gordon also notched a trio of hits. Flowers collected two hits and three runs scored in the final game of his collegiate career.
Grant Birely evened his record at 2-2 on the season, hurling 2.2 scoreless innings. He allowed a single hit and struck out a pair of UTPA hitters. Haines suffered the loss for UTPA as he dropped his record to 2-3 on the season.
UTPA starter Aaron Guerra (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) tossed 6.2 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits in the game. He struck out three hitters in the game.
With the loss, the Broncs concluded their 2005 season with a 15-39 record. The Privateers improved to 16-34 on the season.
