Chance Wheeless collected three hits and drove in six runs for the top-ranked University of Texas as the Longhorns blanked the University of Texas-Pan American baseball program, 12-0, at Disch-Falk Field in Austin, TX, on Tuesday (May 3).
Texas improved its record to 38-9 on the season while the Broncs dropped to 14-37.
The Longhorns, who collected 14 hits in the game, touched up UTPA starter Ryne Foster (Cedar Park, TX/Cedar Park H.S.) in the first inning when Seth Johnston sent a 1-1 fastball over the left field fence. Johnston's sixth blast of the season would score Drew Stubbs and give Texas the early 2-0 lead.
The Broncs would be haunted by Wheeless for the remainder of the game as the Longhorns' first baseman came up clutch with bases loaded on two occasions. The first time he cleared the bases with a double down the right field line to drive the lead to 6-0 in the third inning. He responded again in the fourth inning by sending a Kelly Casares (Missouri City, TX/McClennan J.C.) pitch over the right field fence for a three-run home run, which gave the `Horns an 11-0 lead.
Texas starter Kenn Kasparek held the lead in tack as he tossed five innings, allowing six hits while striking out two in the contest. He upped his record to 4-0 on the season. The combination of Jordon Street, Clayton Stewart and Cody Buck hurled the final three innings and limited UTPA to two hits over that span.
Zach Gordon (Corpus Christi, TX/Midland College) and Matt Eichel (Grapevine, TX/Grapevine H.S.) would each collect two hits in the game to lead the Broncs' offensive attack. Jacob Jones (Kress, TX/Texas Tech University) also drilled a triple in the top of the eighth inning.
Stubbs and Johnston each collected two hits and three runs scored for the Longhorns while Todd Gilfillan racked up two hits and two runs scored. Robby Hudson notched a pair of hits in the contest.
Foster dropped his record to 0-8 on the season as he tossed three innings, allowing nine runs - five earned - on nine hits. Chad Linder (Reklaw, TX/Rusk H.S.), Tim Haines (Mission, TX/Blinn College) and Bobby Gomez (Falfurrias, TX/Falfurrias H.S.) all held the Longhorns scoreless in their single innings of action.
The Broncs will be back in action on May 13th when UTPA begins a three-game series against the University of New Orleans. First pitch will be set for 6:30 p.m.
