The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball team finished action on Saturday (Aug. 27) with a split as the Lady Broncs downed Lamar in their first match followed by a defeat at the hands of Utah State in Tulsa, OK.
UTPA 3, Lamar 2 (25-30, 30-24, 20-30, 30-25, 15-13)
The Lady Broncs picked up their first victory of the season with a five-set marathon triumph over Lamar University at The University of Tulsa Golden Hurricane Invitational on Saturday (Aug. 27).
UTPA finished with a hitting percentage of .224 compared to .138 by the Cardinals, along with a 68-58 advantage in the kills category. Junior Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) dished out 53 assists en route to helping the Lady Broncs collected 63 total assists in the match while the Cardinals could only muster 48 assists. UTPA also blocked a total of 11 attacks while Lamar only notched six of their own.
Senior Danielle Holthe (Covina, CA/Bishop Amat Memorial H.S.) notched 14 kills while only committing three errors in 19 attacks for a hitting percentage of .579 in the match. She also added four blocks in the contest. Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin H.S.) recorded a team-high 17 kills and four blocks while Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) also collected 14 kills.
The Cardinals were led by Molli Abel, who notched 20 kills in the match, while Ashley Todd finished with 43 assists in the match.
Utah State 3, UTPA 1 (30-14, 25-30, 30-24, 30-19)
Utah State's Beth Hodge collected 26 kills en route to finishing with a hitting percentage of .404 as the Aggies handed the Lady Broncs a 3-1 setback in their final match of The University of Tulsa Golden Hurricane Invitational on Saturday (Aug. 27).
The Aggies held a 61-48 advantage in the kills category despite only having one player reach double figures compared to three for the Lady Broncs. Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) picked up her first double-double of the season with a 13-kill, 17 dig performance while newcomer Phillips also attained her first collegiate double-double after notching 11 kills and 15 digs.
Lyons dished out 43 assists for UTPA, and Chrissie Carrigan (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Mount Douglas S.S.) collected 16 digs.
USU middle blocker Erin Graybill made life miserable for the Lady Broncs as she collected eight kills, four block solos and six block assists to lead the Aggies, who doubled-up UTPA in the blocks category by a 14-7 margin.
The Lady Broncs finished the tournament with a 1-3 record and will be back in action on Sept. 2nd at the New Mexico State Volleyball Invitational.
