The University of Texas - Pan American women's volleyball team (3-10) lost a tough match (30-24, 29-31, 26-30, 24-30) to Texas A&M - Corpus Christi (5-3) on Tuesday (Sept. 27) at Moody Fieldhouse in Corpus Christi.
UTPA started off strong, winning the first game convincingly (30-24) with a team hitting percentage of .348 with 18 kills compared to just two errors. That trend did not continue over the next three games as the Lady Broncs committed a total of 30 errors.
The Lady Broncs were led on offense by junior Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) who recorded a match-high 23 kills with only four errors, good for a .380 hitting percentage.
Freshman Deanna Schneyer (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Ranch H.S.) and senior Stephanie Redd (Seguin, TX/Seguin H.S.) both notched double-digit kills with 16 and 15 respectively.
Junior Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) recorded a double-double in the losing effort with a match-high 53 assists and 15 digs.
The UTPA defense was led by junior Chrissie Carrigan (Victoria, British Columbia/Mount Douglas S.S.) who finished the match with 20 digs while freshman Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/Dobie H.S.) had 14 digs.
For the match, the Lady Broncs held the advantage in kills (67-59), assists (62-55) and digs (71-70). Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, however, finished with a higher hitting percentage, out-hitting UTPA .226-.193.
For the Islanders, Anna Machado finished with 16 kills, Carol Marcengo had 23 digs and Paula Araujo had 45 assists.
The Lady Broncs will next be in action at home on Tuesday (Oct. 4) as they host the Texas State Bobcats for "Pack the House Night," with a goal of having 1,004 fans in attendance which would break the previous record of 793.
