The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball team (2-6) made short work of Texas A&M - Kingsville (1-8) in straight sets (30-27, 30-21, 30-19) on Tuesday (Sept. 6) in its home opener at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
"That's what I was looking for, to get stronger and get more cohesive as the match went along," said head coach Dave Thorn. "We started a little slow; to be honest I think we were a little nervous the first time at home."
The Lady Broncs' had a very balanced offensive attack with five players registering at least six kills. Junior Heather Bravo (Las Vegas, NV/Durango H.S.) led the Lady Broncs' with nine kills. Bravo finished the match with a .286 hitting percentage and recorded seven digs.
As a team the Lady Broncs' finished with a .190 hitting percentage, with 41 kills to just 21 errors. UTPA ended the game with a 41-31 advantage in kills and a 41-35 advantage in digs.
Junior setter Karen Lyons (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) led all players in the match with 32 assists, accounting for all but four of the Lady Broncs' 36 assists. Freshman Deanna Schneyer (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Ranch H.S.) finished with a match-high .545 hitting percentage with seven kills. Junior Chrissie Carrigan (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Mount Douglas S.S.) gave another solid defensive effort with a match-high 15 digs
For the Javelinas, they were led by sophomore Shaday Smith who recorded a match-high 14 kills.
The UTPA women's volleyball team will travel to Arlington, TX, to compete in the University of Texas - Arlington Invitational on Sept. 9-10. They open the tournament against the University of Iowa at 1 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 9).
