The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball team (5-13) won its third consecutive game on Monday (Jan. 16) in San Marcos, TX, over the Texas State Bobcats, 79-62. The win was the Broncs' first road victory of the season.
UTPA made good use of strong shooting in the first half, building an eight point lead at the end of the first half, 44-36. The Broncs connected on 52 percent of their shots in the first half, including 6-9 from behind the three-point arc.
In the second half, the Bobcats cut the lead to four, but that was as close they would get in the half. The Broncs pulled slowly pulled away as play continued, building their lead to as many as 19 points inside the two minute mark. UTPA held the lead for the final 30 minutes of the game.
Junior center Colin Lien (Waterloo, IA/Southeastern C.C.) led the Bronc scoring attack with 15 points on 5-16 shooting, including 3-4 from behind the three-point line. Lien also pulled down nine rebounds.
Point guard Larry Sheppard (Baton Rouge, LA/Iowa Western C.C.) pitched in 12 points for the Broncs, along with eight assists and three steals. Dexter Shankle (Katy, TX/James E. Taylor H.S.) was the third Bronc to score in double-digits on the night, with 12. Shankle was 4-8 from the field, 2-4 from behind the arc.
UTPA out-shot Texas State 43 percent to 38 percent and pulled down four more rebounds than the Bobcats, 39-35. The Broncs capitalized on Bobcat miscues, scoring 18 points off turnovers.
The Broncs return home for their next game against IPFW on Saturday (Jan. 21) at the UTPA Fieldhouse with tip-off set for 1:30 p.m.
